Work!

Yow!
So last week I wound up with a lot of things to do, and this week seems to be even more so. I have gotten out of the habit of...doing...homework somewhat over the past year, but I'm doing it anyway. Mainly, I've lost a good sense of how long it takes to get things done. Key concept: Much longer than I think.

Something I feel bad about just now is that I was approached by one of the people running for student body president next year, because they wanted what amounted to character vignettes in comic strip format. They didn't offer compensation, but I said I could prolly do that, and so forth. Well, every time I thought about it since then I kept realizing that I basically couldn't do what they were asking. I don't know why, precisely; probably doesn't help that I don't know them very well. And now I've got so much work that it won't get done anyway.

I don't want to just go "You got what you paid for, nyah" because that's not how I feel, because I do like helping people and don't like having to back on things I say I'll take care of. I learned my lesson, though, and turned down an opportunity to do a logo for some folks (again, uncompensated)...

I like drawing stuff, and I wish I could spread my work around more I guess, but my time is pretty finite, and I think people assume that when they ask for some graphics-type work they're asking for me sitting down for ten minutes and taking care of it, whereas in reality they're asking me to think about the thing for maybe a day before sitting down and hashing it out for a few hours, and if it's big enough it might need more iterations of that cycle. I guess I could sit down and do something in ten minutes, but not probably something I would offer to someone. I guess the moral of the story is, James wants to draw for free but gets in trouble when he tries.

Typical tired sort of post, this is. Blame the weather :D

  • I totally know what you mean. I don't like accepting jobs that I'm not compensated for either, cause people really don't realize how much time it really takes. It's not that easy.
